1.1 Let’s Get Started

Hello, I'm David Sparks, and welcome to the Alfred Field Guide. Alfred is an application for your Mac that just makes everything more productive and more efficient.

The reason I'm making this field guide is because occasionally I'll be using my Mac and someone's looking over my shoulder and they always say, "Wait a minute, what did you just do?" Because I'll send an email super fast or open a document or do any number of things I can do with Alfred. And that's always the answer—it's Alfred. Alfred is what makes me so fast on my Mac, and I want you to be fast on your Mac as well. This is a great app to do that.

In this field guide, I'm going to go soup to nuts. We're going to start with the basics, but we're going to go through all the core features in great detail so you understand how each and every one of them works.

Then Alfred has a plug-in system called Workflows that's kind of amazing. There are all these great workflows for different apps and services that you may want to use. I'm going to teach you how to use all of my favorites—there are nearly 40 of them.

After that, I'm gonna teach you how to make your own workflows so you can create custom solutions to make Alfred work for you. We'll also talk about automation because Alfred is a great partner for automating your Mac.

We'll end with some interviews with some of my favorite people who are also Alfred power users. We're going to learn about their favorite workflows, tips, and tricks for Alfred.

By the end of this thing, you are absolutely going to be an Alfred ninja.
